Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, (TCAT) Inc. is looking for a Transit Service Supervisor to assure that a high quality of service is being given by Bus Operators to passengers through supervision, coaching, mentoring and fostering a supportive work environment. Candidate must lead by example and ensure compliance with TCAT’s policies and procedures, DOT and DMV regulations, administer 19 A compliance and testing. Pre-employment drug testing and background check are required.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises bus operators and monitors adherence to routes, schedules, personnel and operating rules and regulations.
- Knows and understands the labor agreement and properly applies the agreement to various situations.
- Is responsible for the well-being, morale, welfare and corrective action of assigned bus operators:
- Manages assigned operators work performance and attendance through positive reinforcement and corrective action.
- Evaluates, prepares and provides employee recognition notices, performance reviews and corrective action for bus operators.
- Administers NYSDMV Article 19A compliance and testing; maintains bus operator records.
- Trains and instructs bus operators in safe driving practices, passenger relations, fare collection, bus safety and Transit rules, regulations and policies.
- Acts as liaison between bus operators and mechanic staff for bus repairs.
- Knows and understands requirements of ADA as it relates to transit.
- Knows TCAT Policies and Procedures, System Safety Plan, Drug and Alcohol testing policies, State DOT/DMV regulations and Federal regulations.
- Communicates emergency operating plans to bus operators and administrative and transit staff.
- Follows up on passenger complaints relating to operational concerns, passenger relations or safety issues:
- Investigates and documents the nature of the complaint.
- When bus operator safety is in question perform instructional check rides with bus operators to counsel on improved driving techniques or compliance with TCAT safety policies.
- Arrange for retraining where deficiencies warrant additional instruction.
- Performs street supervision assisting bus operators and customers with information and problem resolutions taking corrective action as needed.
- Maintains consistent and effective supervisor/employee working relationships as well as liaison relationships with other TCAT personnel.
- Monitors radio communications insuring proper use and care is taken by bus operators in using the radios and identifying concerns that require immediate response.
- Serves as primary liaison for emergency services requested by bus operators to include mechanic staff, police agencies, and emergency-response units.
- Provides emergency in-service bus replacement as needed.
- Works during inclement weather emergencies assisting dispatch, bus operators and customers.
- Initiates accident investigation and reporting; responds to accidents, cooperates with the police investigation, obtains accident reports, provides reports to insurance offices.
- Participates with special services and events such as Cornell Commencement and Alumni weekend, Fireworks, Ithaca Festival.
- Provides back-up for other transit service supervisors and dispatchers as needed.
Qualifications:
- Must possess high school diploma or equivalent; formal training of one to two years in a technical or trade school, two years college coursework or Associate's degree preferred.
- One - two years supervisory experience preferred; preferably with bargaining unit employees.
- One - two years experience in a transit environment preferred.
- Must possess working knowledge of personal computers, and related word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Must possess valid CDL, Class B driver's license or obtain one within six months of hire.
- Must possess NYS 19A examiner's certification or obtain one as soon as eligible.
- Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management team and passengers.
- Able to exercise good judgment with respect to driver, and passenger welfare and equipment safety.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Bus Handler

Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. is looking for a Bus Handler to join our Second Shift (4:30 PM - 3:00 AM). Candidates would work as part of a team and under very general supervision of the Superintendent of Maintenance to be responsible for the fueling, cleaning and minor service work on all transit vehicles. Background check and pre-employment drug testing are required.
Essential Duties:
- Daily, cleans exterior and interior of vehicles using various tools, appliances and cleaning supplies: empties trash, cleans dashboard, wipes seats, sweeps bus, cleans biohazards, washes wheels, cleans steps and ramps, washes motor and rear of bus, washes wheelchair lift, washes out a/c compartment.
- Details interior of assigned buses based on schedule.
- Performs post check on each bus, records all fluids put into vehicle, completes post check form and log sheet, identifies defects and notifies mechanics of needed repairs.
- Checks belts, brakes, air leaks, lighting systems.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement or obtain license within 3 months of hire date.
- Must have the ability to work independently and on a team.
- Have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with peers.
- Possess good communication skills and be able to deal with fellow workers in a positive manner.
Working Conditions:
- Contact with diesel fuel, fluids, petroleum products, toxic fumes and cleaning supplies.
- Exposed to inclement weather, icy conditions, continually exposed to damp conditions due to use of bus washer.
- Typically bends, twists, stoops, and crouches on a regular basis to clean and detail buses. Stands and walks for long periods of time in the performance of essential duties.

TCAT also seeks applications for part time bus operators whose responsibility is driving well maintained transit buses for a 34 route, strategically planned public transit system. Part time positions are scheduled between 20 – 35 hours a week.
This position requires high level customer service skills, a professional attitude and a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). So, you don’t have a CDL? No problem. TCAT will train you. All you need is the willingness to learn and a strong desire to be part of a team that constantly strives for excellence.
