A lot changes in 10 years. TCAT knows that, and that's why we decided to comprehensively review our route structure. We want to serve our community as best we can with our limited resources.
A large part of our services are fixed route transit, i.e. our bus routes. We have done our best over the years to tailor our service to the needs of the community, resulting in our existing 37 routes. If you're a long-time rider or a champion, experienced public transit rider, this is great--but if you're new to our community or shy about trying transit for the first time, this can be intimidating.
The first thing you'll notice is that the TDP has simplified the route structure from 37 routes to 25 routes. That might seem like a big reduction in service, yet we have managed to make relatively few changes to the overall system footprint! In other words, if a bus goes by your place of employment now, there's a very good chance that the bus will still get you to work. It might have a different number, but it will still get you there.
The advantage of this is it will be much easier to use the system. To take one example only, if you know that a Rt. 30 will get you to the mall, but you're not sure if you should also consider the Rt. 34 or Rt. 35, you'll no longer have to worry. These three routes all follow basically the same path, and under the proposed changes, they'll all be called the Rt. 30.
We hope that these draft recommendations achieve our goal of clarifying and simplying our system. Remember that these recommendations are in DRAFT form, and there is still plenty of time to give us your input. Let us know what you think!
