TCAT Transit Development Plan 2020: Many ways to share your ideas!

Use our interactive tool to design routes, take our survey or plan a meeting with us

TCAT is seeking public input to inform its Transit Development Plan (TDP) 2020, a comprehensive assessment of its bus network with the ultimate goal of improving and growing service.

The initial public part of the TDP kicked off  on Oct. 14, but that was just the beginning. There are still so many ways to offer TCAT your ideas and suggestions for better service.

TCAT’s TDP consulting firm, Sam Schwartz created a fun, interactive planning tool (click here) for participants to draw their ideal route and/or comment on schedules, amenities or any factor impacting how we get you to where you  need to go. The portal will also take you to a brief survey that we urge riders –or anyone interested in their local transit system — to complete.

TCAT conducted its last TDP in 2009, which resulted in a number of service changes that went into effect in January 2010 to include more streamlined routes; the addition of interlined routes or “one-seat rides;” and TCAT’s first-ever demand-and-response service, the route 41. Adhering to an industry-wide best practice, the majority of U.S. public transit agencies undertake a TDP process generally every 10 years.

 Transit Ambassadors

TCAT is excited to have a team of seven Transit Ambassadors to assist with TDP outreach throughout the community. The Transit Ambassadors will serve as liaisons between TCAT and their own networks and communities across Tompkins County. They will be conducting surveys, facilitating discussions, and organizing events to collect feedback on TCAT’s current service and to identify needs for improvement. To learn more and connect with an ambassador, contact Naomi Crimm, Ambassador Lead, at

 Focus Groups

Additionally, TCAT is establishing focus groups comprised of six to 12 people that are representative of various sectors of Tompkins County’s population to include seniors aged 60 and older; middle and high school students; college students; persons with disabilities; and rural and urban residents to gather information in virtual meetings to be scheduled the last two weeks of October and the first three weeks of November. If you would like to join a focus group please email us at or call (607) 277-9388, ext. 560.
